Katie Scheele is a versatile oboist who enjoys an active career in New York City playing all types of music. After moving to NYC in 2003, Ms. Scheele started her journey playing and touring with several orchestras, including the Westchester Chamber Orchestra, the Long Island Philharmonic, the Westchester Philharmonic, the Reading (PA) Symphony, the NY Gilbert and Sullivan Players and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. Ms. Scheele also co-founded the unconventional oboe trio Threeds and plays English horn with them in the city and all over the country. An active studio musician, Ms. Scheele has played on many film soundtracks, including two that were nominated for a 2009 & 2010 Emmy Award in music and sound. She enjoys creating new paths for the oboe, and often plays with several folk and rock bands in downtown NYC music venues including Joe’s Pub, the Highline Ballroom, the Living Room and the Knitting Factory. Ms. Scheele has been featured on over twenty pop albums and several other avant-garde recordings.
Ms. Scheele frequently collaborates with jazz and experimental musicians, and is a member of Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra and was the oboist in Miguel Zenon’s Puerto Rican Songbook at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival. In 2012, she played the solo oboe part from Curtis Mayfield’s “Think” to a sold out crowd at Avery Fisher Hall, collaborating with members of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and TV on the Radio. She has also performed with Frank Ocean at the 2014 Metropolitan Museum Costume Gala, at the Kennedy Center with Stew & Heidi as part of the “Wagner! Max! Wagner” project. Ms. Scheele has also played on several Broadway shows, including King Charles III and Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812.
Ms. Scheele also appeared on the NBC show “America’s Got Talent” accompanying the group Il Divo and Jackie Evancho. She can also be seen in Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle” and on the GMC Acadia commercial “Precision Performance”.
Ms. Scheele received her B.M. cum laude from Northwestern University and her M.M. from Boston University. Her principal teachers include Ray Still, Robert Sheena, Barbara LaFitte and Robert Walters. Ms. Scheele teaches at the Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn. She resides in Brooklyn with her husband, two young sons and goldendoodle named Peanut.
